Oysters at risk
A mild winter followed by a wet spring has exposed French oysters to a killer virus according to L’Ifremer, the French marine research institute. The Oyster Herpesvirus type 1 has destroyed young oysters aged between 12 and 18 months in all of France’s oyster beds bar one, with Arcachon in Aquitaine the only area to escape. France is the largest oyster producer in Europe however the outbreak puts the country’s production levels at severe risk.
