Military shutdown
In a major shake-up of French defence policy, prime minister François Fillon announced that he will close 83 of the country’s military units, ploughing the cost savings back into the armed forces. Some 54,000 jobs are to go which equates to almost 17 per cent of the military workforce. The government has promised a series of strategies for those areas that rely on military bases as part of the local economy.
