- A licensed transport company will have the experience, be fully insured and hold the required licenses to transport animals
- Horses over 14.2 hands need a passport and export licence EXH1, which can be obtained from DEFRA
- Ponies under 14.2hh need a passport and export licence EXH2 as well as proof of the animal’s minimum value
- You will also need to have your pony checked for fitness to travel by an official vet 48 hrs prior to departure to state they are fit and healthy to travel
- Companies that offer a multi-drop service might be cheaper but be aware that the animal could be on the lorry a lot longer
- When taking a dog or cat to France, the animal will need to be micro-chipped and vaccinated for rabies at least 21 days before departure from the UK and will require a pet passport
- A satisfactory blood test must be carried out six calendar months prior to travel for entry or re-entry to the UK
- The animal must be tick and tapeworm treated between 24 and 48 hours before departure back to the UK; this must be carried out by a vet and recorded in the pet passport
- It is best not to feed your cat or dog prior to travelling but always ensure they are provided with fresh water and have plenty of fresh air
- When you arrive in France, contact a local vet to find out if there are any localised diseases you should be aware of
