Take Good Care

Q. My wife and I are planning to retire to France early next year. She will be 63 and entitled to a UK state pension; I will be taking early retirement age 55. We have read a lot about the health-care arrangements, however we are still not clear on one aspect.

My wife will be entitled to an E121 and I will obtain an E106. We understand that my E106 will expire in 24-30 months after moving to France. What happens then regarding my own cover? Some time ago we heard that I might be able to transfer to my wife’s E121, but the clause ‘if dependent’ has been mentioned several times. As our main source of income will be my private pension we are not clear if that is possible. If this is not the case, what are my options to ensure continuity of health care and what would you recommend we do?

Can I presume that I will be entitled to an E121 when I reach UK state retirement age of 65? We have already established that I have the required number of years of NI contributions to secure a state pension.
